The 6 Rs of Cloud Migration

Not every workload migrates the same way. We assess each application and recommend the right strategy from quick lifts to complete re-architecture so you balance speed, cost, and long-term value.

Rehost

Lift & Shift

Move applications to the cloud with no code changes. Identical infrastructure, cloud-hosted. Fastest path to cloud — ideal for time-sensitive migrations where you need to vacate a data centre quickly.

Best When

Data centre contract expiry, compliance deadlines, or need to migrate 100+ servers in weeks, not months.

Replatform

Lift, Tinker & Shift

Migrate with minor optimisations — swap your database engine for a managed PaaS equivalent, or your app server for a containerised runtime — without re-engineering the core application logic.

Best When

You want meaningful cloud benefits (managed patching, auto-scaling, backups) with minimal refactoring effort.

Refactor

Re-architect

Redesign and rebuild the application to be cloud-native — breaking monoliths into microservices, adopting serverless functions, containers, and managed cloud APIs. Maximum long-term value and agility.

Best When

Applications that need significant scale, speed, or developer productivity improvements that only cloud-native architecture can deliver.

Repurchase

Drop & Shop

Replace your existing on-premise or licensed software with a SaaS equivalent — moving from custom CRM to Salesforce, on-prem ERP to SAP S/4HANA Cloud, or on-prem HR to Workday.

Best When

Licensing costs are high, vendors offer better cloud editions, or internal apps are undifferentiated commodity functions.

Retire

Turn It Off

Identify and decommission applications that are no longer used, duplicated by other systems, or below the threshold of business value to justify migration costs. Typically 10–20% of any estate.

Best When

Portfolio rationalization audits reveal orphaned apps, duplicated capabilities, or systems with zero active users.

Retain

Keep It Here

Some workloads — due to compliance, latency requirements, recent on-prem investment, or technical constraints — are better kept on-premise or in a hybrid model, at least for now.

Best When

Recent hardware refresh, data sovereignty rules, ultra-low-latency OT systems, or regulatory requirements that mandate on-premise processing.

Our Migration Journey Model

A battle-tested, five-phase approach that de-risks your cloud move — delivering value early and continuously throughout the engagement.

01

Discover & Assess

Automated discovery of every server, application, dependency, and database. TCO modelling, readiness scoring, and migration wave planning across your full estate.

02

Design & Plan

Target architecture definition, landing zone setup, network topology, identity federation, security baseline, and a detailed wave-by-wave migration playbook.

03

Pilot & Validate

Migrate the first wave of low-risk workloads. Validate connectivity, performance, security, and operational runbooks before opening the floodgates on critical systems.

04

Migrate at Scale

Execute wave-by-wave migration with automated tooling, parallel cutover strategies, rollback playbooks, and 24/7 monitoring ensuring zero unplanned downtime.

05

Optimise & Evolve

Right-size compute, activate Reserved Instances, implement FinOps dashboards, decommission old infrastructure, and modernise iteratively post-migration.

On-Premise → Cloud: What We Move

A visual map of the typical workload transformation we execute — from legacy on-premise stack to fully managed, cloud-native equivalents.

On-Premise (Legacy)
Cloud-Native (Target)
Physical Servers / VMs

Bare-metal servers, VMware ESXi, or Hyper-V clusters in on-prem data centres

Life Before & After Cloud Migration

See exactly what changes — and what improves — when your infrastructure moves to the cloud with Shalom Infotech.

⚠ Before Migration
High CapEx Hardware Spend

3–5 year hardware refresh cycles with large upfront capital outlay and unpredictable failure costs.

Fixed Capacity, Always Over-Provisioned

Servers sized for peak load run at 15–30% utilisation most of the time — paying for idle metal.

Slow Disaster Recovery

Manual DR runbooks, offsite tape backups, and recovery times measured in hours or days.

Weeks to Provision New Infrastructure

Server requisitions, procurement, racking, cabling — 4–8 week lead times to spin up new capacity.

Patching & Security Burden

Manual OS patching, vulnerability management, and compliance audits consuming your IT team's time.

✦ After Migration
Pay-As-You-Go OpEx Model

No hardware procurement. Scale up or down monthly and pay only for what you actually use.

Auto-Scaling on Demand

Burst to 10× capacity in seconds during peaks. Scale back to zero overnight. Zero wasted spend.

Automated Backup & 1-Hour RTO

Geo-redundant, automated backups with point-in-time restore and Azure Site Recovery or AWS DRS.

New Environments in Minutes

Spin up new dev, test, or production environments with Infrastructure-as-Code in under 10 minutes.

Managed Security & Compliance

Automated patching, built-in threat detection, policy guardrails, and continuous compliance reporting.

Frequently Asked
Questions

How long does a cloud migration take?
Migration timelines vary by scope. A small business with 10–20 servers can complete migration in 4–8 weeks. A mid-enterprise estate of 100–300 VMs typically takes 3–5 months using a wave-based approach. Large enterprises migrating 500+ workloads may run 6–12 month programmes. We always deliver value in the first 2 weeks — the first wave of dev/test workloads is usually live before the discovery phase is even complete for the full estate.
Will there be any downtime during migration?
For most workloads, we achieve near-zero downtime using continuous replication-based tools like AWS MGN and Azure Site Recovery. Data is replicated in real time to the cloud environment. Cutover involves a brief maintenance window — typically 15–60 minutes — planned during off-peak hours. For databases, we use continuous replication and binary log streaming to keep the downtime window under 5 minutes for most scenarios. Mission-critical applications get individual cutover plans.
How do you handle data security during migration?
Data security is non-negotiable throughout migration. All data in transit is encrypted using TLS 1.3. Data at rest is encrypted using AES-256. We use private network connectivity (ExpressRoute or VPN) for replication traffic — no data travels over the public internet. Access is controlled through dedicated service accounts with minimum necessary permissions, audited and revoked post-migration. We also conduct a security assessment of the target environment before any data is moved.
What if something goes wrong during migration? Do you have rollback plans?
Every wave has a documented, tested rollback plan. Because we use replication-based migration tools, your on-premise systems remain fully operational throughout — we keep them running and synced until we've validated the cloud environment is healthy post-cutover. If anything fails our acceptance criteria, we revert traffic to on-premise in minutes. We have executed over 300 workload migrations with zero unplanned rollbacks — but the plans are always there and always tested.
Will our cloud costs be lower after migration?
Almost always — but the magnitude depends on your starting point and how well the migration is optimised. A like-for-like lift-and-shift of over-provisioned on-prem servers to cloud VMs may not immediately save money. The real cost reductions come from right-sizing, Reserved Instances and Savings Plans, and decommissioning the on-prem infrastructure post-migration. Our clients average 35–45% TCO reduction within 12 months of migration completion.
